Ce puissant brise-glace transportait environ 80 voitures ou 12 wagons interprovinciaux de chemin de fer. Il appartenait à la Canadian National Railway.
Construit par Armstrong-Whitworth Co. de Newcastle-upon-Tyne (Angleterre), il a été lancé le 10 mai 1914. Ce ferry de 300 pieds fut mis pour une courte période sur la route Charlottetown-Pictou. Il est transféré avec le SS Stanley au nouvel itinéraire entre Cap Borden et Cap Tormentine en 1916.
Après l'échouage du SS Charlottetown, le retraité SS Prince Edward Island a repris du service jusqu'à 1969, ce qui lui permit de conquérir le titre envié du ferry le plus longtemps en service à partir l'île du Prince Edward.

After the wrecking of the SS Charlottetown, the retired SS Prince Edward Island was brought back into service. She continued in service until 1969, earning the distinction of being P.E.I.'s longest running ferry. For a short period, the 300 foot P.E.I. ran the Charlottetown-Pictou route, transferring with the Stanley to the new Cape Borden-Tormentine run in 1916
